Regelmatig krijg ik de vraag wat het verschil is tussen de W&N Cotman en de W&N Professional watercolors. Dit is meteen het verschil tussen student kwaliteit en kunstenaarskwaliteit. Cotman is de semi studentenrange van W&N maar net iets beter, en de Professional is de Kunstenaaarskwaliteit. 

Wat is het verschil tussen student- en kunstenaarskwaliteit?
De student versie is een range lager dan professionele kwaliteit. Bij de student versie zijn er consessies gedaan om de verf betaalbaar te maken. Een merk als W&N zal geen product maken waar ze niet volledig achter staan. Dus het studentenlabel geeft aan dat het zeker een goed product is maar niet het aller beste. Wil je het beste, dan betaal je daar ook meer voor.

Een ander verschil is dat bij de Cotman verschillende pigmenten worden gemengd om tot een bepaalde kleur te komen. Bij verf heb je het eigenlijk het liefste dat het uit een pigment bestaat. Dit zorgt er namelijk voor dat je kleur zo helder mogelijk is.

Bij Cotman wordt er dus sneller een paar kleuren gemixt, wat een voordeligere manier is. Het is alleen nét niet zo helder dan als het zou zijn van de Professional.

Verder zit er net wat meer bindmiddel en goedkopere pigmenten in de Cotman. Dit kan ervoor zorgen dat de verf net wat dekkender is. Bij de Professional wordt zoveel mogelijk pigment in de verf gestopt en zo min mogelijk bindmiddel.

Waarom kies je voor de Cotman of voor de Professional?
Met W&N Cotman is er bijvoorbeeld het palet van 45 kleuren en deze is heel betaalbaar. De grote range aan kleuren is heel handig zijn als je een beetje moeite hebt met kleuren mengen. Maar het is ook een super fijn palet om met aquarelverf te beginnen. Het palet komt ook met ruimte om te mengen.

Wat leuk is bij de W&N Professional is dat je je palet zelf kan opbouwen door losse tubes te kopen. Zo heb je exact de kleuren die je denkt nodig te hebben. Ook kun je de verf gewoon hergebruiken als het is opgedroogd. Dit is super fijn omdat je dan niet onnodig verf verspilt. Ook verlies je er geen kwaliteit mee. 

Als je wil beginnen of heb je moeite met mengen dan raad ik je aan om te beginnen met de Cotman. Mocht je al wat meer ervaring hebben met aquarel dan raad ik je de professional aan.

Furthermore, there is just a little more binder and cheaper pigments in the Cotman. This can ensure that the paint is just a bit more opaque. With the Professional, as much pigment as possible is put into the paint and as little binder as possible.

Why do you choose the Cotman or the Professional?
With W&N Cotman, for example, there is the palette of 45 colors and it is very affordable. The wide range of colors is very useful for when you have a bit of trouble mixing colors. But it is also a super nice palette to start with watercolor paint. The palette also has room to mix your own colors.

What's nice about the W&N Professional is that you can build your palette yourself by buying separate tubes. This way you have the exact colors that you think you need. You can also simply reuse the paint once it has dried. This is super nice because this way you don't waist paint unnecessarily. You also don't lose quality with it.

If you want to start or if you have trouble mixing, I recommend starting with the Cotman. If you have more experience with watercolor, I recommend the professional.
