If you are going to start with modern calligraphy, your first dilemma may be: how do I attach the pen to the pen holder? Because that can be confusing. I show you how to attach the pen in a straight pen holder as well as in an oblique pen holder. You may be thinking: I know how to attach a pen to the holder. Then I think this blog contains a number of tips on how you can improve that.
This is how you attach the nib to a straight pen holder
There are pen holders with a metal opening and with a plastic opening. The metal opening can be adjusted to the size of the nib. This can be useful because almost every pen has a different size. With the plastic holder, it is important that you purchase a suitable pen holder.
With a plastic pen holder:
We'll start easy, because this one is actually very simple: you slide the pin until it is firmly in place. Then you're ready to go ;). Push the pen well into the pen holder so that it is firmly secured. With a plastic pen holder you have to pay a little more attention when purchasing, the nib must of course fit exactly in because you cannot adjust anything else.
With a metal mounting:
At first glance, attaching a pin to a metal mounting seems super easy. There are a number of things that ensure that your pen sits a lot more firmly and are less known.
Place the nib on the center of the interruption in the circle
The interruption in the round may seem like it doesn't belong. That one is really special. You attach the nib so that the interruption of the circle is in the middle of the nib. Then the nib is most secure. You slide the pen down far enough so that it sits firmly in the pen.
Let the pins 'rest' against each other in the middle
The pins in the middle must point towards each other so that they touch each other in the middle and, as it were, push against each other. This is especially important with small pens, such as the Brause Ef66. You can easily bend the pins a little with the bottom of a nib. If the pins do not point to the center, you will have some play on the nib and the pin will wobble. And of course you don't want that if you want to do calligraphy with clean lines.
Are the pins not seated properly?
The pins in the pen are sometimes completely inward or outward. With the back of a nib you can bend the pins in or out again.
And what is also important: push the pen far enough into the pen holder, otherwise the pen will still wobble.
With an oblique pen holder
An oblique pen holder is always made for a specific nib (series), so the pen stays in place tightly. Usually pen holders are shaped for the G nibs. This fits a number of different nib sizes, but at least the Nikko G, Tachikawa G and Zebra G. Do you want to adjust the holder for a different nib? To do this, use small pliers and bend the holder very carefully. You must of course do this with great care so that the flange is not damaged.
With an oblique pen holder, it is important that you slide the nib properly into the holder. The tip of the nib should end up exactly in the center of the pen. You can see exactly what I mean in the last photo.
Hopefully this gets you started!
