Which pastel pencil should you choose? In this blog I will mention the unique properties of the pastel pencils that we sell in the shop. In two other blogs I compare wax/oil colored pencils and here watercolor pencils .
What are pastel pencils?
Pastel pencils are very soft pencils. In the core of these pencils is a soft pastel, so the content is powdery. Pastel pencils are best used on paper with a grainy structure, so that the pigment can adhere well.
It is also very fun to experiment with pastel pencils on colored paper! Because they are a bit harder than pastel chalk or soft pastel, pastel pencils are very suitable for adding details to a drawing that you have made with pastel chalk. Make sure that you work from light to dark with pastel pencils. Layering dark colors over lighter colors makes the darker shades pop. If you were to do it the other way around, you would get a stain and it will not be possible to get the light color to cover properly.
Good to know: with pastel pencils it is extra important what kind of paper you use. Paper with a structure, or a bit of 'tooth' gives the best results.
In our shop we sell three different ranges of pastel pencils:
- Caran d'Ache Pastel Pencils
- Faber-Castell Pitt pencils
- Derwent pastel pencils
Caran Pastel – premium option
The Caran d'Ache Pastel pencils are premium pastel pencils, with a beautiful texture and good lightfastness. These are wonderful pencils for adding details to soft pastel work. These pencils are available in 84 different colours. They are extremely soft, in a good way, which makes it easy to fill a large area, among other things.
Faber Castell Pitt – reliable option
The Pitt pencils by Faber-Castell are good and lightfast pencils. The core is medium hard for pastel pencils. They have a good price/quality ratio.
Derwent Pastel – soft option
The Derwent Pastel pencils are known for their soft texture and excellent blending possibilities.
That was a short introduction to this line of colored pencils in the shop. Hopefully all the information makes your choice a bit easier
Tip: Are you still not sure which one you want to use? Order the same color of each pencil. That way you can compare them best. Would you rather not order the same color so often? Choose different colors that are not in the set you have in mind. That way you can try out the pencils and then use them well as a supplement.
