Summer is getting closer and for many people that also means that it is time for a fun trip or holiday! Whether you're going on a three-week sunny holiday or a few days away, it's great fun to record everything you see and experience on paper. In this blog I will tell you which drawing materials are useful to take with you when traveling or on a day out!
Indispensable basic materials
There are a number of materials that are almost indispensable if you want to draw. Consider a fine graphite pencil, a good eraser and a pencil sharpener. I am a big fan of the Blackwing pencils for sketching. They are nice and soft and are easy to erase. You can do this with, for example, a Milan eraser or the Tombow Mono Zero eraser if you only want to erase small details. They definitely fit in your pencil case or bag!
A nice sketchbook
This is actually also an indispensable basic material, but varies a lot more per person: a nice sketchbook! You can of course just use your favorite sketchbook, but perhaps you are looking for something more compact or something that offers many useful extras for on the go.
Talens sketchbooks are budget-friendly and have different sizes that you can easily take with you. For example, the square sketchbook of 12x12 cm probably even fits in your handbag, but also takes up little space if you take a carry-on suitcase with you when traveling. If you prefer something larger, you can go for the 14x21 cm. This one is longer in width rather than length, which is a nice variation on standard sketchbooks. Because the paper is suitable for graphite, colored pencil, ink and watercolor. This makes these booklets ideal for travel journaling!
If you also like to keep receipts, cards and other nice memories in your sketchbook, you could also look at Mossery . These booklets have enough pockets for all your papers in both the front and back. These are available in watercolor, mixed media and plain.
Lots of color!
Everything looks so colorful in the summer. It would be a shame not to incorporate this into your drawings! Depending on what you like to work with, there are plenty of travel sized options. If you like working with colored pencils, you can put a few of your favorite colors in your pencil case, but a small box with a few colors is also easy to take with you. For example, consider a set of 12 colored pencils from Faber Castell or Holbein . With such a basic set you can go in any direction!
Do you always work with watercolor paint? Then there are many handy palettes for on the go to choose from! The Watercolor Confections from Prima Marketing contain 12 colors with which you can capture everything. For example, the Pastel Dreams is great fun for the summer! A handy basic set is the Winsor & Newton Cotman , also with 12 colors and a travel brush. There is also a travel set with 12 colors, which also includes a sponge and a container for water. This way you can be sure you don't miss anything! If you always work with tubes, it would be a shame to purchase a new palette. What I find a solution is a foldable mixing palette! Simply squeeze a small amount of watercolor from each tube you would normally want to take with you, close the palette and it's ready to go. When using watercolor paint, it is useful to have some water with you. Bring a large Dinky Dip square refill that you can fill in advance or on the go!
Striking details
It's fun to experiment with materials if you're planning a fun day away or holiday. Do you make a lot of drawings with colored pencil? Or with watercolor paint? Then add some details with a brightly colored or metallic marker. You can highlight that one beautiful building or statue you have seen with, for example, a gold Sakura Pen-Touch. Of course you can also do this with the beautiful Finetec palettes! Here you have even more color variation. You can also add extra eye-catching text to your work with a colored Tombow Fudenosuke or Pentel Pen Touch. Experimenting with different materials is extra fun if you are planning holidays.
Have a nice holiday!
Love,
