Watercolor Confections Excellent Review | Review of the Prima Watercolor Confections

watercolor confections review

In this blog I review the Prima Watercolor Confections . Prima sets are popular because of the beautiful selections of colors, and there is a good chance that such a palette contains exactly your favorite colors. In any case, they look very nice, but does the paint paint as nicely as how they look?

The Prima Watercolor confections palette

The colors are packed in a nice, sturdy metal box. When you open the palette, an extra picture unfolds next to the lid. When the palette is unfolded, you have two plates on which you can mix the paint. The pans of paint are clamped between metal edges and are therefore easy to arrange in your own order.

If you like: the empty row in the middle can be used for extra colors. An extra row of pans of paint that fit exactly in between. There is a ring at the bottom of the palette, which makes it easy to hold the palette when you are painting on location. Each color palette is packaged the same way.

The colors in the palette

If there is something nice about the Prima palettes, it is the selection of beautiful colors per palette. Almost all brands make a basic selection in a palette, so that you can mix all colors. With the Watercolor Confections, Prima chooses to put a color shade in a palette that fits together beautifully. The selections of colors they make are very cool. There are 10 different palettes available. My favorites are: Vintage pastels , Pastel dreams & decadent pies .

The palette in the photo below is decadent pie .

Pigments and quality of the watercolor paint

As always, I first test the materials before they come into the shop, including the Watercolor Confections from Prima Marketing. The brand claims to provide Artist quality paint, so I was very curious to see if this is really true. What I think: it is not Artist quality, but it certainly does not make the paint any less nice. The paint is highly pigmented and has other advantages. It actually works wonderfully!

Why don't I think it's Artist quality? A professional quality watercolor paint must be completely transparent, which is a requirement for professional watercolor paint. The Watercolor Confections are not as transparent as a Winsor&Newton Professional is, for example. That's actually the only reason why it's not professional quality paint. There is also a little too little known about the pigments and lightfastness.

That does not prevent it from being a fine quality paint, so the paint does not require the professional quality label. If I had to label the paint, it would float around student grade. The Watercolor Confections is more opaque and makes it very easy to work with the paint.

Unboxing & swatching set

A palette is packed in a paper box and the box contains a piece of paper on which you can make a Swatch. I swatch two palettes: the vintage pastels and the Decadent pies. Of course you can see best in the photos what the end result is ;).

I'm a fan of the colors, and you? :)

Frequently Asked Questions:

Is this a nice starter set?

If you are just starting to paint, a Prima palette is definitely recommended. I would choose the Watercolor Confections if you like to work with specific colors. The advantage of these palettes is that you don't have to mix colors right away, something that I found very difficult in the beginning. If this palette is slightly above your budget, the Winsor & Newton Cotman set is recommended.

What kind of brush is best to use with this paint?

For watercolor painting you can actually use all the brushes from the shop. The Princeton Heritage&Neptune are real watercolor brushes. The Neptune series has very soft bristles and retains the most water. The Heritage series is similar to sable hairs and is by far Princeton's most popular series for watercolors. The hairs spring easily, but also easily return to their shape. Velvet Touch & Select are mixed media brushes and therefore have somewhat firmer bristles.
